So, when all that discussion about United was going on.. the one question I had was “Wait, why would an Airline deliberately overbook their tickets”. And I couldn’t find an honest answer why.
On the radio they mentioned (NPR) that this is what every airline do. They overbook their own tickets so that in case of cancellations or such, they are covered. A “little” inconvenience for customers but a safe bet to profitability.
Sounds like it’s not a big deal, but we all saw how that played out. Poor chap is never flying United again (and so are millions)
